Corrugated Crawfish Trays

  • Heavy wet loads
  • Moisture barrier essential
  • Boil and festival service

A crawfish tray carries several pounds of hot, wet, seasoned shellfish, often with corn and potatoes, straight out of a boil. It is the single most demanding wet-load application in board packaging, and the reason is simple: heat and water together attack fluted board from both directions.

A tray that works for this has a proper moisture barrier and a board grade specified for a genuinely heavy load. Anything less fails in front of a customer.

  • Moisture-barrier liner on the food-contact face, not optional
  • B-flute or heavier for a multi-pound wet load
  • Deep walls that hold a mixed boil without spilling
  • Prints well for boil houses, festivals and seasonal operations

Pricing starts from $0.30 per tray

The unit price depends on the size, board, printing, finishing, quantity and delivery country, so every quote is worked out for your specification rather than taken from a list.

02 — Build the spec

Design this tray in five steps

The same five questions we would ask on a phone call, with the corrugated crawfish tray already selected. You get a properly detailed brief at the end, which is what makes a first quote accurate rather than approximate.

Step 1 The tray and the food

Pick the closest style. If nothing matches, choose “Something else” and describe it at step 5.

Step 2 Size and material

Internal measurements at the base if you have them. Approximate is fine — a physical sample is better still.

Step 3 Structure, lid and print

Compartments keep a wet element off a dry one. Fewer print colours than you think: one well-drawn ink on kraft usually beats a mediocre four-colour design.

Step 4 Quantity and artwork

Give your realistic annual usage if you can — the unit cost curve tells you more than a single quantity does.

PDF, AI, EPS, PSD, JPG, PNG or ZIP. Up to 12 MB. A rough sketch is genuinely useful; we supply a dieline before your designer starts.

03 — In detail

Why this is the hardest job for board

Fluted board wicks liquid along the flutes faster than it absorbs it through the liner. Add heat and the process accelerates sharply. A crawfish boil is hot, wet, and heavy — three conditions that individually are manageable and together are not, unless the tray is specified for it.

The answer is a genuine moisture barrier on the food-contact face and a board grade with real margin. We would rather tell you at quote stage that your intended specification will not hold than let it fail in a boil house on a Saturday.

What to tell us

  • The weight of a typical loaded tray, and the heaviest you serve.
  • Whether the boil goes in draining or straight from the pot with liquid.
  • The temperature at service and how long the tray sits before it is eaten.
  • Whether trays are carried by hand, stacked, or set directly on a table.
  • Whether it is an eat-in table format or a takeaway pack.

Getting a boil tray right

  1. Load a sample and leave it

Fill a candidate tray with an actual boil and leave it for the length of your typical service. Most failures show within twenty minutes, and this test costs nothing.

  2. Specify the barrier before the board

Moisture ingress is the failure mode. Get the liner right and then choose the flute for weight, rather than the other way round.

  3. Size for the shared portion

Boil is a sharing food. A tray sized for one portion looks mean at a table where four people are eating from it.

  4. Design the print for a wet environment

Ink on the outside is fine, but a design that relies on a crisp white background will not look right once the tray has been handled with wet hands.

Holding ice? A tray holding ice for a service period is a different specification again, because melting ice becomes standing water — the hardest condition of all for board. Tell us if ice goes in the tray and for how long, and we will specify accordingly or tell you plainly that a different material is the right answer.

05 — Questions

Corrugated Crawfish Tray questions

Will a corrugated tray really hold a hot crawfish boil?

A properly specified one will, for a normal service period. A standard corrugated tray will not — it will soften from the inside within twenty minutes. The moisture barrier is what makes the difference, and it is not optional here.

How heavy a load can these trays take?

That is a specification rather than a fixed figure. Tell us the weight of your heaviest loaded tray and how it is carried, and we will grade the board and the walls for it with margin.

How deep should a crawfish tray be?

Typically 75 to 100 mm for a mixed boil with corn and potatoes. Load an actual portion into a sample and tilt it — if anything escapes, go deeper before committing to the die.

Can the tray hold ice?

Ice for a short service is possible with a proper barrier. Ice for hours becomes standing water, which is the hardest condition there is for board. Tell us how long and we will either specify for it or tell you to use a different material.

Is this only for crawfish?

No — the same specification suits shrimp boils, clam bakes, mussels, and any hot wet shellfish service. Tell us the food and the liquid volume and the tray is designed the same way.

Can I print on a boil tray?

Yes, and boil operations are one of the strongest branding cases in seafood — the trays sit on communal tables in front of large groups. Just design for a surface that gets handled with wet hands rather than one that relies on a pristine background.

Do these trays stack?

Loaded, not really — a wet boil tray is not a stable base. If you need to move several at once, a rack or a carrier is a better answer than stacking. Tell us and we will size the tray to fit a carrier.

What size suits a table for four?

Boil is a sharing food, so size for the table rather than the person. Serve a typical four-person portion onto a table, measure the area it covers when spread rather than piled, and work from that.

Do you supply these outside the US?

Yes. Crawfish boils are a regional US tradition, but the same tray specification suits shellfish service in the UK, Canada and Australia. Tell us the destination and we will quote the landed cost.
