Food Trays for Taco Shops and Taquerias

Tacos fall over. That single mechanical fact drives the whole packaging category, and it is why a taco shop needs a holder rather than a tray, in a way that most other food does not.

The complication is that soft and hard shells behave completely differently, and a holder that works perfectly for one will damage or fail to hold the other.

Soft and hard shells are different products

A hard shell is rigid and roughly consistent in width, so a slot can be cut close and the shell will stand on its own. A soft shell is floppy, its width is determined by the filling, and it relies on being packed against its neighbours to stay upright.

A holder cut for hard shells will crush a soft taco. A holder cut for soft shells lets a hard one rattle and tip. If both are core menu items, two holders is usually the honest answer — and if you tell us the split between them, we will say which compromise we think is right rather than selling you one of each by default.

Beyond the holder

Combination trays

A wider tray holding a taco holder plus rice, beans or chips turns three containers into one and speeds up the counter noticeably.

Nacho trays with dip wells

A nacho tray with one or two wells covers chips with salsa, cheese and guacamole without a separate pot.

Open trays for bowls and burritos

A general-purpose open tray handles burrito bowls, loaded fries and mixed portions from the same stock.

Chip and dip formats

A two-section tray for a chips-and-salsa side that is a genuine upsell rather than a giveaway.

Details that matter at a taqueria counter

  • Slot depth deep enough to support the shell below the filling line, or the taco tips forward when it is picked up.
  • A base wide enough that a loaded holder does not go over on an uneven surface.
  • Grease resistance, because taqueria fillings are wet and run down the shell into the base of the slot.
  • A front skirt tall enough to carry legible print — this is the panel the customer sees.
  • Flat-packed stock, because taco holders take a lot of space assembled.

Questions from taco shops & taquerias

Can one holder work for soft and hard shells?

It can, but it is a genuine compromise — a slot cut for a soft shell is loose for a hard one, and one cut for a hard shell squashes a soft taco. If both are core menu items, two holders is usually the better answer.

How many slots should a holder have?

Three is the standard single serving in most taquerias. Two suits a side or child portion, four and five suit sharing. Look at your most-ordered combination and build the standard holder around it.

Will wet fillings soak through?

On untreated board, a saucy filling will darken and soften the base of the slot. A grease-resistant face handles a normal service. Taqueria fillings are wetter than most, so specify it.

Can the holder sit inside a larger tray?

Yes, and it is a good combination for a meal deal — three tacos plus rice, beans or chips in one container. Tell us the outer tray dimensions and we will size the holder to drop into it.

What about nachos and chips?

A nacho tray with one or two dip wells covers chips with salsa, cheese or guacamole without a separate pot. It also works as a chips-and-salsa side that reads as a real upsell rather than a giveaway.

How much can we print on a taco holder?

The front skirt is the main panel — usually an inch to an inch and a half tall and the full width. That is enough for a logo and a short line, and the side panels take a repeat pattern well.

Do holders take up much storage?

Not flat-packed, which is how they ship. Assembled they are bulky and nest only partially, so assemble as you go rather than building a shift’s worth in advance.

Can you match the holder we use now?

Yes. Send one in the post, or photograph it flat and folded beside a ruler. We can rebuild the flat blank from a folded sample and match the slot width exactly.
